An elderly man and his son are now homeless after a fire of so far unknown origin, destroyed their
two-storey house located at Lot 123 Block Y Diamond New Scheme, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
The fire started a little after 08:30 hrs yesterday.
Those homeless are 78-year-old Agib Rahim and his son, Adil, 41. The duo has a confectionary business at the Stabroek Market Bazaar, Georgetown.
Yesterday, Adil Rahim said that he was at his business place when one of his neighbours called and informed him that his home was on fire.
The man said that he informed his father about the tragedy after which he immediately travelled to the location where his worst fear was confirmed.
“They said that the fire started in the front room. That is my father’s room and he doesn’t have anything in there. Neighbours said that prior to seeing the smoke, they smelled burnt wires so I don’t know if it was electrical or what,” the 41-year-old said.
He added that when he left home around 06:00 hrs for work, all his electrical appliances were unplugged.
Rahim, who lived in the house for more than four years, said that he recently purchased a bed set and other items to furnish the property for the Christmas holiday.
Kaieteur News was told that a relative of the two men, Melisa Rahim and her two-year-old daughter, Gabriella, who had been staying there for the past three weeks, also lost their personal belongings in the fire.
“Neighbours said that the fire tenders took long to come and by the time they got
water, the entire place was already burnt,” Rahim related.
He added that the only thing he and his father now have, is the clothes they left their home with early yesterday.
Meanwhile, Jennifer Greene, one of Rahim’s neighbours, said that she was sitting in her verandah when she noticed smoke emerging from the three bedroom house.
The woman said that she immediately called the fire service, but a fire tender arrived after almost an hour despite being located in the same village.
“The house was smoking first. It was smoking for like 35 minutes. We saw the flames like about five minutes before the first fire tender arrived,” Greene revealed.
She added, “When they come, they had a little water. When they managed to get water from a nearby drain, the entire place was already burnt. They called for two tenders in Georgetown but by then, everything was destroyed.”
The woman as well as other neighbours said that if the fire tender from Diamond had arrived immediately after they called, Rahim’s home could have been saved.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
