NA United face Cougars for third
Exactly two weeks of exhilarating action will come to an end this evening when the final
of the Stag Super XV1 knockout football tournament is contested between Grove Hi Tech and Ann’s Grove at the #5 ground, West Coast Berbice.
But before this game, two of the teams from the East, Berbice Football Association (New Amsterdam United and Cougars) will be battling each other for the third and fourth places in this competition which attracted the 16 best teams from the East Demerara (6), East Bank (5) and Berbice (5) associations.
When the action kicked off on December 14 at the same venue it was any body’s guess as to which of the two teams would have made it to the 1.5 million match today. Beyond the shadow of a doubt, the best two teams have earned the right to battle for the most lucrative prize in their respective histories.
While Grove will be at full strength for this encounter today with their most lethal marksman Domini Garnett at the forefront, Ann’s Grove will be without the services of their main goalkeeper, Travis Allen who suffered a fractured jaw following a collision with a Cougars player in their semi final game in December 28 last at the Buxton ground.
Manager Gordon Reynolds informed that another keeper would take Allen’s place and not the
man with the golden hands, Jamal Blair who filled the gap for Allen when he had to exit the semi final clash in the 68th minute.
Blair kept well and despite letting in the equalizing goal that sent the game into extra time, saved two goals in the ensuing penalty kicks to hand Ann’s Grove passage to the championship game. Navado Denny will start in goal for Ann’s Grove and is expected to be the only change to the starting X1 from the semi final.
The other players are Andrew Murray, Dwayne Duke, Linden Roberts, Levon Adams, Jamin Rogers, Maxton Adams, Antonia Jackson, Quincy Johnson, Nickose Denny and Kevon Barry.
Grove Hi Tech will be aiming to make Ann’s Grove their third scalp from the East Coast having already taken care of BV Triumph United and Buxton United. The task will not be easy though, since their final opponent accounted for some tough opponents too including Corriverton Links, Victoria Kings and Cougars.
It will take some doing for Grove to emerge as the only unbeaten team in order to take the top prize, ambitions that Ann’s Grove are also harbouring. Grove will again look to the energetic and smart Domini Garnett who has scored four goals to date including all three that saw them past NA United 3-2 in a grueling semi final battle.
Goalkeeper Rondell Alleyne who has conceded two goals in three matches, both in the last game will once again play a pivotal role between the uprights for his team as will the likes of Captain Shermon Doris, Travis and Trevoc Jones, Clive Matthews Jr., Wayne Andries, Nathaniel Pilgrim, Romel Matthews, Devon Joseph and Orson Francois.
The third place showdown between two home teams is expected to be laden with fireworks as the respective sides aim to end the tournament on a high. New Amsterdam will be led by the Adams siblings, Leonard and the competitions leading goal scorer, Adrian who has 7.
Jamal Butts, Jermaine Samuels, Rondell Hazel, Dane Johnson and custodian Javano Dos Santos will all be working in tandem to secure a NA United win. Cougars will look to Adrian Bess, Dirk Henry, Carlton Brutus, Stefano DeFlorimonte, Dalton Moore, Ron Wilson, Sherwin Halley, Collis Bennett and Jermaine August to see them through to victory.
After the on field action is served up and consumed by the fans as the main course, dessert will take the form of an international show that will feature Lil’ Rick and Skinny Fabulous who have promised to make the evening an unforgettable one for the fans and players after a hard two weeks of competition.
Game time today is 18:00hrs.
