The year 2014 was a busy and successful one in terms of tournaments for
the Guyana Badminton Association (GBA) with the Association hosting an International tournament, Players Development Programme and gaining Cooperate new sponsors like Continental Group of Companies & E-Networks.
The GBA held local tournaments during the year and successfully hosting the GUMDAC Open Tournament, the National Sports Commission (NSP) Age Group Tournament, Guyana Olympic Association Discover Tournament, Guyana Classic International Tournament and the Woodpecker Products Age Group & Open Tournament.
At the International level, Guyana attended the Suriname International Easter Tournament winning 11-Trophies, the Caribbean Regional Badminton Championships in Jamaica winning eight Medals, which included a Gold medal, five-Silvers and two Bronze.
Guyana also participated in the Pan American Olympic Festival Tournament in Queretaro, Mexico, the Inter Guiana Games in Suriname, where this Country finished second and the Central American & Caribbean Games in Veracruz Mexico.
Narayan & Priyanna Ramdhani made a clean sweep of titles when the Woodpecker Products Annual Christmas Singles concluded in December at the Queens College Badminton Courts with the Round Robin Singles Tournament.
The Ramdhanis won all the Singles events in the different categories and carted off all the first prizes with matches being played in the Under-13, 15, 19 & Open Events.
According to GBA’s President Gokarn Ramdhani the experienced gained by the players saw much improvement in their game in an upward direction. “Our Top players continue to show their talent as they performed well on the international side, standing up to the world ranked players,” Gokarn Ramdhani said.
He expressed pleasure that he was elected General Secretary of the Central American & Caribbean Games 2014-2018 at the CAC games in Mexico and for the confidence showed by the International Community in his ability and interest to help in the development of Badminton.
The GBA Head was also elected General Secretary of the Caribbean Regional Badminton Confederation last year in Jamaica for a two-year term.
“We still face a lot of difficulties in getting a steady supply of feather shuttlecock which have to be used to train our players for international tournaments. These shuttlecocks are very costly as up to five or more can be used in a match. We are working towards getting a supplier,” Ramdhani explained.
“The development of the junior players was affected by after-school lessons and this continues to be a problem, which we will have to try and solve. The GBA would like to thank Director of Sports Neil Kumar for allowing us to play at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall which has the wooden floor and already we are seeing our players training more intensely” Ramdhani disclosed.
Ramdhani thanked Guyana Olympic association for their continuous effort to help Badminton and sports in general and promised to continue to have Badminton played at a high level. He also thanked the Media, Sponsors and all who supported Badminton during the year and look forward to their continuous support in 2015.
