Clevon Romero and his colleague, Edward Castello, both of Lima, Essequibo Coast, were each sentenced to 20 years in jail by Justice Franklin Holder, at the Suddie High Court.
Castello and Romero were jointly charged with murder in 2012, of the then 66-year-old Herman Ramnarine. They first appeared in the Anna Regina Magistrate’s court.
Ramnarine was discovered by his wife Hemiwantie Ramnarine, with his hands bound behind his back and a piece of cloth tied to his throat in the bottom flat of their Lima Dam residence on October 25, 2012.
Before Justice Holder handed down his sentence to the duo, Castello and Romero were asked if they had anything to say. They both responded in the negative.
Both men who are in their twenties were represented by Defence Attorneys, Dexter Todd and Latchmie Dindyal. During the initial hearing of the matter they recorded not guilty pleas.
Castello and Romero invaded the pensioner’s Lima Dam house on October25, 2012, minutes before midnight. The men carried out a robbery attack on Ramnarine and left him for dead in the lower flat of his house before turning their attention to his wife, Hemiwantie Ramnarine who pretended to be dead.
She was eventually hospitalized for the injuries she sustained.
The men reportedly stole $250,000 and phone cards. A post mortem revealed that the pig farmer died of strangulation.
The couple operated a small shop.
