Faith King, the mother who lost her home and all of its belongings in a fire on Friday, at the 183 Middle Road, La Penitence, Georgetown residence, believes that the blaze was the result of a malicious act by neighbours.
The 56-year-old woman and four others— Simone, 27; Melissa, 17; Brian Lewis, 20 and six-year-old Malesa Bovell – Simone’s daughter – are now homeless due to the inferno which fire-fighters concluded originated from an electrical malfunction.
It is for this very reason that King is suspicious of the fire’s origin as the home did not have any source of electricity. “Somebody did it. We don’t get electricity,” she told this newspaper.
Kaieteur News understands that King and her family have been squatting on Government reserve for the past 32 years. According to her, the state land was being occupied by the Kings and another family.
King said that her husband had reached an agreement with the other family when they first started to live on the premises. However, after the death of the head of the household, King explained that the two families have had many disputes concerning the squatting area.
She said that the day after the fire, the other family members had already removed the wreckage from where her house stood and had begun to fence off the area.
“The people who live in front done push back everything and build a fence,” said King.
She also revealed that mere hours after losing her home, an overseas relative of the said family called, telling King that she will have to move as they need the land.
With the land dispute between the families and the destruction of her home, King is convinced that the origin of the fire was not an accident, rather an act of arson.
Since the fire, King and her family have been allowed to stay with another neighbor. She said that they even had to borrow clothes because everything in their home was destroyed. The mother is calling for the help of public spirited citizens.
