A 6 goals blitz by Trayon Bobb (23, 42, 44, 53, 83, 90) supported by doubles from Kieron Solomon and Terrence Lewis (10;38 and 8:58 respectively), further aided by one goal apiece off the boots of Dellon Cadogan (37) and Sherman Anthony (36), propelled the Georgetown Football Club FC to a crushing 12 nil shutdown over Houston Stars FC when the action continued in the GFA/Banks Beer Cup Round Robin football tournament at the GFC Ground last Saturday evening.
A blow by blow report would highlight the fact that more than 80% of the Group ‘B’ fixture was played in Houston Stars FC territory and the fact that the margin of defeat was not wider was due, largely in part, to tardiness of the GFC players. It was a total walk in the park for the eventual winners who scored 8 of their goals in the first session. Notwithstanding, the consensus seems to suggest that the win may be the shot in the arm that the GFC needed to advance to the knockout round of the tournament.
The feature match between Western Tigers FC and Fruta Conquerors was far more competitive and in the end, the former team managed to squeeze the juice from the latter with 1 nil victory after Daren Benjamin netted in the 20th minute of the game.
Both teams attacked frenetically at the whistle and the exchanges during the early stages were truly exciting. The Benjamin goal came after a clever bit of weaving culminated in a powerful shot that passed the opposition’s defence and goalie.
Conqueror’s striker, Pernell Schultz should have equalized some ten minutes later but his firm right foot shot slid along the right of the ‘Tigers’ goal. As the battle continued, Western Tigers’ striker, Mervyn Joseph, attacked and unleashed a ferocious kick to the opposition’s goal but their goalie, Dennis Edwards, plunged to his right and chucked the ball back into play. Another Western Tigers player, Mervyn Joseph, adroitly weaved his way to Conqueror’s goal, swiveled on the ball of his right foot and struck but was dismayed to see his shot sailing over the upright.
The Fruta strike force of Jermaine Taylor and Schultz continued to work hard yet failed to find the magic to equalize the situation and the teams went in at the intermission with the score unchanged.
Fruta Conquerors continued to search for the equalizer early into the second session when Schultz sent in a fierce kick only to be denied after the Western Tigers custodian, Dereck Carter, flung himself to the right and intercepted the ball. Thereafter, the battle intensified with both teams enjoying favourable moments; through skilful intervention and staunch defensive work on both sides, the score remained unchanged.
Schultz was to feature once again as the clock wound down the minutes, and with just the goalie to contend with, the striker lost his nerve and pushed the ball down the right side of the Western Tigers’ goal. It proved to be the last chance to bring the situation back to equilibrium as the shrill sound of the whistle sealed the issue for the West Ruimveldt based team.
Play continued at the same venue last evening when Beacon FC opposed Camptown while Riddim Squad matched skills with Santos FC. Those results will appear in tomorrow’s edition.
