Chief-of-Staff of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), Brigadier Mark Phillips commissioned a modern Army Base at Strand, New Amsterdam on Saturday.
Ranks will occupy the base by February 1, 2015; moving from the present location at LFS Burnham Street, New Amsterdam, adjacent to the Central Police Station.
The dome-like structure has all of the facilities of a modern base. Also present at the commissioning ceremony were: Region Six Chairman, Mr. David Armogan; Commanding Officer Major Colin Henry; members of the religious community; senior Police ranks within ‘B’ Division and soldiers.
Brigadier Phillips, during his address, urged his ranks to work more collaboratively with the Guyana Police Force in ‘B’ Division, especially in times of disasters.
“It means that we must work with the regional authority beyond the normal Regional Intelligence Committee meetings, so I will ask Major [Claude] Henry to sit with our Regional Chairman and iron out a number of activities that we can participate in because we are the People’s Army,” the official said.
He ascribed the role of the army to more than fighting crime and keeping borders safe from intruders. “We want to do more than that. We want to be involved in the development of youth and the economic development of the Region.”
Further improvements are slated for the army base at Number 63 Village, as well as on the Corentyne.
The programme concluded with the ceremonious cutting of the ribbon of the new facility.
