– family skeptical about report
Relatives of a 32-year-old porter are skeptical about reports of the circumstances surrounding his death on the
UNAMCO trail, Berbice River, last Thursday.
Police state that Calvin France, of Lot 117, Sideline Dam, Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara, was crushed after tumbling from a lumber-laden trailer, which was being hauled by a truck.
According to a police source, France, a father of three, was sitting in the trailer, which was laden with ‘form boards’, when the trailer entered a rut on the UNAMCO trail. France reportedly tumbled from the trailer and one of the wheels crushed him.
But close relatives of the victim said that they have also received reports that France was injured in an altercation with another man who was on the vehicle. A relative, who viewed his body at the Lyken Funeral Parlour yesterday, said that France’s left arm and leg were broken, and that there was the imprint of a tyre on his stomach. However, the relative claimed that it did not appear as if he had been crushed and that she saw no other injuries.
The relative also questioned the fact that another porter who was allegedly on the trailer was not injured. France is survived by his three children, aged 12, four and two.
