Chief of Staff of the Guyana Defence Force, Brigadier Mark Phillips, once again warned Officers and Ranks of the GDF’s zero-tolerance policy on drug use and drug trafficking activities.
The warning comes on the heels of the arrest of a soldier who was found to be in possession of over 400 grams of marijuana earlier yesterday.
The Chief of Staff gave the warning while addressing ranks at Base Camp Stephenson.
He reminded the troops of the GDF’s policy with regard to such matters and warned that immediate disciplinary action will be instituted against any Officer or Other Rank found to be in contravention to the Force’s Standard Operating Procedures regarding these matters.
“The GDF has a strict policy regarding drug and substance abuse and we will rigidly enforce it. Consumption of narcotic substances and trafficking in same are against the law, and any Officer or Rank who is found to have broken the law in this regard, will face very stiff penalties,” he said.
Kaieteur News understands that acting on intelligence gathered that soldiers are in the habit of transporting marijuana to interior locations, Police searched a GDF Private at the Ogle Airport just as he was about to board an internal flight to the GDF base at Kaikan.
The herb was found stashed in his military kit. He is expected to appear in court today.
The soldier was immediately dismissed with ignominy from the GDF.
