Topp XX got off to a winning start on the opening night of the Upper Demerara Football
Association’s 2014/2015 GT Beer ‘Supa 16’ football tournament on Sunday at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground in Linden.
Young striker Duquan Hercules scored the game winner in the 9th minute of play to secure victory for Topp XX against Amelia’s Ward Panthers in the first official game of the competition.
The tournament’s opening ceremony saw a march past of the 16 competing teams and remarks by Minister of Public Service Dr. Jennifer Westford, Region Ten Chairman Sharma Solomon, Banks DIH Limited Communications Manager, Troy Peters, GFF Technical Director Lyndon France and President of the UDFA Collis Grith.
Minister Westford also performed the ceremonial kick off ahead of an exhibition match played between two veteran teams from the Mining town representing North and South.
The Minister congratulated the executives of the UDFA for organizing the tournament and she urged members of the community to attend the matches. Minister Westford thanked main sponsors Banks DIH Limited for supporting the tournament.
Solomon said the tournament will showcase the talent of Region Ten as football returns to the community at yearend where it had been popular for the past two decades.
Peters said that Banks DIH is committed to the development of sports in Linden and he commended
the UFDA for showing foresight and fortitude in organizing the tournament against the backdrop of other tournaments being hosted around the country at this time of the year.
The competition continues tomorrow evening with a double header card at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground.
Blueberry Hill FC will battle Canvas City Vasco at 18:00 hours (6p.m.) while the second game will bring together Block 22 Goalgetters and Ituni Peacemakers at 20:00 hours (8p.m.).
Matches will also be played on December 19th, 22nd, 25th, 26th, 28th with the grand final set for January 1, 2015.
