The ground was a little wetter in some spots than desired, but the infectious goodwill of
the Maersk Guyana SA representatives and the enthusiasm of the golfers caused Saturday’s play to be exciting and refreshing. The Danish company Maersk, considered the largest container shipping company in the world, sponsored their first Golf Tournament in Guyana, on Saturday last.
Sam Harry, who placed third in the previous Saturday’s tournament, emerged champion by delivering an inspiring 12/67 as he brushed off the keen challenges from 2nd place Patanjalee ‘Pur’ Persaud 26/68 (who was also 2nd in the previous Saturday’s tournament), 3rd place Rabindranath ‘Pandit Ravi’ Persaud 25/68, 4th place Kalyan Tiwari 20/68 and 5th place Jeetendra ‘Naro’ Danpat 9/71. (In some sports the 2nd, 3rd and 4th places would have been a tie – each with a net 68 – but in golfing the performance of the golfers on the latter half of the game, called the ‘back nine’ or ‘back nine holes’ is first used to determine the place in like scores, since generally players do not tie in their play in the back nine holes.)
Nearest to the Pin was Ramesh Anirude, while Best Gross of the day was won by reigning Guyana Open champion Avinash Persaud 2/76.
Captain Chatterpaul ‘Chen’ Deo was pleased at the good turnout and the highly competitive performance of the golfers and conveyed his best wishes for the season to all present. Both he and Club President David Mohamad expressed gratitude to Maersk Guyana, SA for their coming on board the Golf flagship in Guyana, and looked forward for a long and great relation between the company and the Lusignan Golf Club.
Mr Robin Muneshwar of Muneshwar’s Shipping of 45-47 Water St., Georgetown, the local agents for Maersk, expressed the company’s pleasure at supporting Golf in Guyana and assured those present that it will look at repeating the good experience.
