– Leopold Street outlasts Sparta Boss for third place
Known more for their defensive obstinacy than their offensive expertise, North Ruimveldt
gave opponent Festival City Warriors an efficient combination of both to capture the final of the Georgetown Zone of the Guinness ‘Greatest of de Streets’ Futsal Competition which ended late Sunday night, at the National Park.
Playing before another big crowd, North Ruimveldt, led by former national striker Travis ‘Zorro’ Grant and the experienced Gerald Grittens produced a near flawless display to come out 2-0 winners which guaranteed them a place in the national playoffs and more importantly the first prize of $500,000 and a trophy.
After a goalless first half, Grittens gave North Ruimveldt the lead when he fired into the goal in the 37th minute of play to evoke loud celebrations among the team’s supporters.
Two minutes later, Grant stretched their advantage when he slipped one past the outstretched foot of a defender and once again the venue erupted in wild celebrations.
Festival City Warriors walked away with $300,000 and a trophy along with the chance to vie for top honours in the national playoffs.
In the third place playoff, former champions Leopold Street through goals from Omallo Williams, who netted in the third minute and Claudio Rajkumar’s 31st minute strike held off Sparta Boss by a 2-1 margin.
The prolific Sheldon Shepherd was once again on the scoresheet, netting in the 12th minute to level the proceedings at one stage.
Leopold Street walked away with $200,000, while Sparta Boss collected $100,000 for its effort.
The final had in attendance Guinness Brand Manager Lee Baptiste along with other officials from the beverage giants Banks DIH.
