Relatives of Leroy Francis-Harris, the father of one, who was electrocuted two Wednesdays ago when he
came into contact with a live wire while working on a three-storey building in Evans Street, Charlestown, say that they are not satisfied with the compensation they were offered.
The incident occurred around 17:00hrs.
Harris’ colleagues said that at the time of the fatal incident, he was using what is called a flex; a flexible pipe -looking object.
This object, they claimed, came into contact with electrical wires and the man was fatality injured.
In an interview with this newspaper recently, the dead man’s mother, Patricia Kirton said that it took her days to meet the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Readymix Concrete Limited, located at Eccles Industrial Estate, EBD, the company her son was employed with.
“I went and they telling me all sorts of things. The last time I went there I told them that I will call in the media, that is when I got a call to meet the boss man on Monday,” an upset Kirton noted.
She added that when she met with the employer, he gave her a cheque worth $400,000.
“He give me the cheque and tell me that he wants to see my son’s child mother and his seven-month-old baby. He also said that he is gonna give the child some milk and see in whatever way he can assist,” the mother said.
The woman added that her son’s life is not worth $400,000 and baby milk.
“I am thankful for the help but my son’s life is worth more than that so I will not accept that money,” Kirton lamented.
Recalling what transpired on the day her son was killed, the woman said that she received a call sometime after 17:00hrs from her son’s co-workers.
The woman said they informed her that her son had encountered a problem with some electricity, “but they did not tell me that it was serious, that he had been shocked and was in bad shape.”
She said she never expected to hear that her son had died.
The 25-year-old Plaisance, East Coast Demerara (ECD) man was employed with Readymix Concrete Limited for almost a year.
