Dec 10, 2014 Letters
Dear Editor,
I read the letter by Mr Brynmor Pollard SC, in the Stabroek News dated 7th November, 2014, and captioned ‘Difficult to envisage how AG could now be conferred with silk’. Nothing is impossible with this shameless and disrespectful regime.
At the time of writing this missive the said Chat-3 still remains in the arms of the President guiding him down the road of self destruction. While I agree with counsel that in no other jurisdiction would such conduct be tolerated, Guyana has not only gone lawless, it has degenerated to the lowest of low.
I do not share the presumption by counsel that if the thoroughbred is not conferred with silk, it is unlikely that no member of the Bar would be so elevated, inclusive of the two females in the Solicitor General and the Director of Public Prosecution.
Of the two offices the former has always been held by Senior Counsel. As far as I can recall the only person who held that office in an acting capacity was Fitz Peters and according to rumours he was listed to be elevated.
As far back in the colonial days Gilbert Farnum QC; Gonsalves Sabola and Julian Nurse were all Senior Counsel. Fitz Peters acted until his return to private practice. I believe that Ian Chang happens to be the only holder of the office of DPP conferred with silk.
The Solicitor General, Sita Ramlal, undoubtedly is so qualified to be conferred with silk and I see no reason why she should b denied this elevation.
