…Sattaur promises to sue for libel
Deputy Leader of the Justice for All Party, Jaipaul Sharma is accusing Commissioner-General of the Guyana Revenue
Authority (GRA) Khurshid Sattaur of harassment, and of launching a political attack against him.
Sharma alleges that Sattaur made a profanity-laced telephone attack on him right after yesterday’s television programme ‘Voice of the People’. The politician and former Member of Parliament (MP) said a caller had earlier contacted the programme to talk about a letter Sattaur wrote about business people.
Sharma said a conversation commenced about Sattaur’s role as the head of GRA and certain assertions were made. Sharma said he saw several missed calls on his cell phone from a certain number and returned a call.
At first, he said, he did not recognize the voice of the person whom he claims was shouting and swearing on the other end. He said the person yelled, “y’all like talk about people and people can’t defend themselves.” The person then told him that he (Sharma) is talking about other people and he owes tax.
It was then, Sharma said, he recognized the voice as that of the GRA head. Sharma continued that when he asked what tax he owed, Sattaur reportedly told him about his duty-free vehicle. Sharma related that his report to Sattaur was that he owes no tax since he did not sell or transfer his vehicle, and when that is done, he opined, then GRA can compute the sums to be paid.
Sharma claims that the GRA boss then swore at him saying emphatically, “This is nah how dis (expletive) thing does wuk. You got to pay now!”
Sharma claims that he reminded Sattaur that no notice or correspondence was dispatched to him. In the back and forth, Sharma said he was told that no notice has to be served on him, since he knows what he has to do.
According to Sharma, he then pointed out to Sattaur that all dismissed, resigned and retired public servants have to be asked to pay tax on their duty free vehicles – along with MPs – should Parliament be dissolved. He claims that Sattaur went on some more before saying thank you and hanging up his phone.
Sharma said while on the programme, he was talking about the reasons he believes Sattaur dropped the case against
Kaieteur News Publisher Glenn Lall.
Sharma said when he spoke with Sattaur he understood that Sattaur had not seen the programme, but was told by someone that he was being discussed.
Meanwhile, Sattaur told Kaieteur News that he did have a conversation with Sharma and he has every intention of suing him for “libelous and defamatory” statements. Sattaur said that if Sharma’s conscious is troubling him over his vehicle then that is his concern. The Commissioner General said he is however “disturbed” by the derogatory and vicious statements made against him and he (Sattaur) has every right to pursue the matter, even as a private citizen.
Sharma said he is promoting himself for the Justice for All Party and views Sattaur’s attack as political.
