12 and 13-year-old Ramroops debut
Rookie Richard Haniff, who has been playing golf just about 1 year now, continued a fine season
when he carted off the top prize in the annual year-end Grand Coastal Golf Tournament last Saturday.
Grand Coastal Hotel & Restaurant of Le Ressouvenir, East Coast Demerara, rated as “your number one choice for business or pleasure accommodations in Guyana, South America,” has been sponsoring a year-end tournament for nearly a decade. General Manager of Grand Coastal, Mr Kevin Daby, on hand to congratulate the winners, expressed Grand Coastal’s pleasure in supporting the Lusignan Golf Club by sponsoring tournaments.
The competition for the over 40 golfers who participated, saw Haniff, handicap 20, returning a net score of 63 to be a clear winner. Haniff also turned in the best gross of 83 and therefore also won another prize. He delightedly explained, “I had posted on my facebook page the 5 trophies I won during this year at golf, and mentioned that I hoped to add a sixth in the Grand Coastal Tournament, but in fact, I’ve added two today!” But it was his attitude to the game that was remarkable he noted. He was able to focus on playing each hole on its own merit, and feeling good about his play, not checking on his scores until the last 3 holes. GM Mr Kevin Daby, a personal friend of Richard Haniff, was highly commendable of Richard’s outstanding performance.
Club President David Mohamad thanked Grand Coastal for their consistent and dependable sponsorship
of tournaments. He noticed that the friendly but keen rivalry the golfers exhibited, after the three week lay-off from competitive play due to too wet grounds, continues to augur well for the sport in Guyana. He made special note of his pleasure at the debut of 12- and 13-year-old Lakshana and Sachin Ramroop, and welcomed the involvement of more such youthful players in the game of golf.
