– after reaching third final
After struggling through the earlier rounds of the third Phillip George Legacy tournament,
slowly building momentum with their impressive win against Pacesetters to oust the number one seeded Georgetown team; Ravens are finally firing on all cylinders.
With Coach Darcel Harris back in charge, Tyrone Hamid cemented the dominance of the Ravens Sunday night in their semi-final game against Colts with a humongous dunk from the baseline, in an 85-68 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The win meant that though they limped, Ravens are now headed full throttle for yet another title in the Phillip George tournament, having already won the two earlier episodes in 2012 and 2013; Ravens’ three-peat now looks eminent in two weeks’ time.
Guard/forward, Akeem Kanhai scored 22 points to lead Ravens as Ryan Gullen adding 13 points and Jermaine Slater 12 points; Marlon Rodrigues and Hamid ended 11 and nine points to cap off an all-round team effort for the Ravens in their third title bid.
Shane Webster had 16 points for Colts, who looked like early favorites after leading 35-34 at the halftime break. Guard, Dave Causway had 15 points while Shelroy Thomas had 10 points for the Colts that had played unbeaten before reaching Ravens.
The game was more or less decided in the third quarter when Ravens outscored Colts 30-13 for a 16-point lead after the penultimate period. However, Nikkoloi Smith and Causway landed three-point jumpers to cut the lead to 10 points in the last quarter. It was too late to stop Ravens from a sure place in the final.
Republic Bank Nets will join Ravens in the final after continuing their unbeaten run with a 75-61 win against Pepsi Sonics. Mortimer Williams scored 20 points to lead Nets with Antwaun Austin adding 11 points for the win. Shooting guard, Trevor Smith shot his way to 25 points while Colis Pluck had ý11 points for Sonics.
In the third division competition, Colts topped Plaisance Guardians 63-55 to reach the finals with Leonard Primo scoring 16 points while Errol Dryden had 12 points in the eight point win for the Colts junior team, which got due reprieve for the senior team flop.
For Guardians, Colwin Nurse had 21 points while Kelvin Yorrick scored 17 points. In the other semi-final, Eagles soared above the University of Guyana to win 73-55 to move onto the final of the third division tournament.
Kevin Higgins dumped in 15 points while Lyndon Wilson and Travis Belgrave had 11 each for the Eagles. Kheon Evans helped with 10 points. For UG, Quincy Easton was the top scorer with 19 points while Dwight McKinnon and Sherlan Gillis scored 13 and 10 points respectively in the loss.
