Using sport as a tool to keep youths off the road and away from illicit activities, the police
Berbice (‘B’ Division) Crime Reduction unit under the theme “Prevention is better than cure” on Friday donated a number of school bags and some other necessities to children of three primary schools in New Amsterdam Berbice.
The simple yet significant ceremony was held at Central Police Station in New Amsterdam. Those selected include children from less fortunate families mostly from the Angoy’s Avenue area and who would have shown good aptitude to do well in school in both academics and sports.
Officer in charge of Sub-division No 1, Assistant Superintendent of Police Ronald Alli and Station Sergeant of the CPS Michael Newland both alluded to the effort being made by the police in the division to help the youths and curb their involving in crime.
ASP Alli noted that it was realized that within Berbice crime is committed mostly by those between the ages of 16-35 years of age. As such, focus is being placed on strengthening community development through partnership in sports and youth engagements.
Mr. Newland also noted that persons should lend a helping hand to their communities and other troubled areas. He said that efforts must be made to break the trend that is plaguing the society and empower youths to be involved in constructive activities towards a brighter tomorrow.
