At approximately 19:00 hrs last evening, at Kartabo in the Essequibo River, two motor vessels collided, resulting in the death of one passenger.
One of the vessels was captained by Lloyd Apple, 54, while the other was being operated by Pamela Persaud, 34, who had her uncle, Anthony Williams in the vessel. Williams succumbed to the injuries he sustained during the collision.
At present Apple is in custody at the Bartica Police station while Pamela Persaud is hospitalised at the Bartica Hospital.
Public Works Minister, Robeson Benn, said boat operators are not adhering to safety procedures in the night as they are operating without lights, which is against the rules.
The Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) is investigating the incident.
