A chainsaw operator died at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) last Saturday, seven days after he was reportedly set alight by his employer in a mining camp at 14 Miles Mabura, Upper Demerara River.
The incident occurred around 17:30 hrs on November 30, last.
The dead man has been identified as David Campbell of Old Road, Timehri, East Bank Demerara (EBD). Campbell had sustained third degree burns about his body.
His colleagues, Jason Persaud, Etwaroo Karran and Tyron Campbell, who were also in the camp when it was set alight, managed to escape without injuries.
According to police sources, the survivors informed them that after a hard day at work, they went to their camp to relax.
“They said that David fall asleep and they see their ‘Boss man’ drinking at his camp and a little after he called out and asked them to move the tractor from where it was parked and put it at another location,” the source said.
He added that the survivors claimed that they did not respond to their employer’s request since they were all tired.
“They said that the boss man picked up the diesel and throw it on their camp and set it on fire. They run out but David left inside because he was sleeping,” the police source said.
Kaieteur News was told that after the fire died down Campbell managed to crawl out from under the fallen roof. He was subsequently rushed to the Mackenzie hospital before being transferred to the GPHC.
The ‘Boss Man’ has not been arrested.
