Police have recovered the body of 31-year-old Linden resident, Leon Cornelius, who died in a boat mishap in the Cuyuni River last Friday.
Relatives identified Cornelius on Saturday after viewing his remains at the Lyken Funeral Parlour.
The circumstances surrounding the mishap are still unclear. Relatives declined to speak to Kaieteur News.
According to reports out of Bartica, the boat, identified as the ‘Fenella 2’, had just come from an area known as ‘Devil’s Hole’, when it struck a rock. Cornelius was reportedly hurled overboard.
Kaieteur News was told that the vessel was powered by a 200 HP Yamaha outboard motor and is a registered passenger boat that operated from Bartica to the Cuyuni River.
The Cuyuni River is one of the most treacherous to traverse.
In May, 2013, four passengers drowned after their vessel capsized near Matuk Falls, Cuyuni.
In December, 2008, army ranks Private Colwin Harris and Corporal Wesley Hopkinson perished in a two-boat collision at Eteringbang in the Cuyuni River.
