The You and I Foundation is setting about to tackle the effects of bullying within society and the school systems.
The foundation, which is affiliated with A Global Movement for Children, is raising awareness on social issues in Guyana via workshops and special events.
President of You and I Foundation, Michelle Bristol disclosed that the agency will be working with the Ministry of Education, Child Protection Agency and the Georgetown Public Hospital. These sessions are aimed at raising awareness in schools from Nursery to Secondary. Thirty schools have been chosen and visits will commence from December 5, 2014. Pamphlets, brochures and other items will be shared out during these sessions.
“We need corporate society to come on board and address bullying before it becomes an epidemic and serious social issue.” Ms Bristol noted.
The types of bullying underscored were: Physical bullying, Verbal bullying, Relationship Aggression, Cyber bullying, Sexual Bullying and Prejudicial bullying. Its effects were also highlighted, including excessive alcohol use, skipping school, anxiety, depression, poor grades, low self esteem, health problems, retaliation, internal conflict that includes piercing, cutting and suicide.
According to research, bullying, whether it’s physical aggression or spreading rumors, boosts the social status and popularity of middle school students. In addition, students already considered popular, engage in these forms of bullying, the researchers found.
The ‘You and I Foundation’ is a Non-Governmental Organisation with a motto of encouraging and empowering humanity. The organisation is setting out to educate in the transformation of moral and ethical values which the entity notes is responsible for bullying, chronic depression, murders and suicide. It was launched last October.
