The West Demerara Football Association (WDFA) received vital support yesterday when
local company Banks DIH Limited, under its Aqua Mist Pure Artesian Well Water and Vita Malt Plus brands, threw their support for that association’s year-end football tournament. The event is set to kick off on Sunday with two qualifiers.
Ten clubs from the West Demerara Association will battle for supremacy with two qualifiers fixed for Sunday at the Den Amstel ground, the venue for all the matches. The winners from those two games will join six other teams in the tournament proper, set to kick off on December 12. Matches will also be held on December 14 and 20, with the grand final on December 26.
At the launch held at Banks DIH, Thirst Park Headquarters, it was revealed by WDFA President Nigel Garraway that the top four teams will earn the right to compete in the Georgetown Football Association’s fourth annual Banks Beer Cup from the knockout stage after an invitation was extended to the association to send representatives to that tournament.
The winning team will earn $1 million, while the runner-up will pocket $500,000. The third and fourth place finishers will get $300,000 and $200,000 respectively. Individual prizes for the Most Valuable Player, highest goalscorer and best goalkeeper are also at stake.
The clubs competing: Beavers, Young Achievers, Slingerz, Stewartville, Pouderoyen, Den Amstel, Uitvlugt, Eagles, Wales and Bagotsville.
The tournament is being held in memory of the late Assistant Police Commissioner Derick Josiah, who died by accident in December last year. During his time, Josiah played the game and was also an active administrator in the West Demerara area.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Eon Amsterdam, lauded the organisers for a fitting tribute to Josiah. He said the Force was planning its own tournament to honour the late rank. Amsterdam further promised that the Force will be working along with the WDFA to ensure the competition is held annually in memory of his late colleague.
Aqua Mist Brand Manager, Errol Nelson, labelled the launch of the tournament as “groundbreaking” since it was the first time the company has invested in such a massive way in football in the West Demerara area. He made reference to Banks DIH Limited’s sustained investments in football, highlighting the Pee Wee Under-11 tournament, the Guinness Greatest in the Streets and the GFA Banks Beer Cup.
Banks DIH Non-Alcoholic Brand Manager, Clayton McKenzie, echoed similar sentiments, adding that Vita Malt Plus, which has a blend of Ginseng, Royal Jelly and Aloe Vera, is the perfect beverage for players competing in the competition, as it has all the ingredients to allow for success on the field.
Also attending the launch were Banks DIH Communications Manager Troy Peters, WDFA Vice-president Orin Ferrier, WDFA Treasurer Denise Lovell and representatives of the participating clubs.
