Well-known Guyanese actor/director, Mahadeo Shivraj, has been recognized by a US city, with a day declared
in his honour for work in films and plays.
The Office of the Mayor of Schenectady, New York, issued an official proclamation declaring November 30, 2014 as Mahadeo Shivraj Day in that city.The proclamation explained that Shivraj was born and raised in Georgetown.
“As a child, he knew he wanted to become an actor. In 1987, he began his acting career at the National Cultural Centre and to date has acted in more than 90 plays and directed more than 30 in Guyana and New York.”
Shivraj migrated to the US in the 1990s to continue his acting career. Since then he has acted in more than a dozen films and television shows.
He played in “The Americans” alongside Keri Russell and Rahul Khanna; “The Smurfs” alongside Neil Patrick Harris, “30 Rock” alongside Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin; “Three Backyards” alongside Elias Koteas and Edie Falco; “Speechless” with Academy Award winner Holly Hunter and “Lipstick Jungle” with Brooke Shields. He has also featured in “Law and Order SVU” with Mariska Hargitay and in “Cop Shop” with Academy Award winner, Richard Dreyfuss. He has also acted in more than a dozen independent films.
In 2010 Mahadeo debuted as a film director and producer with the movie “Till I Find A Place”, which was filmed entirely in Guyana and which received rave reviews. He has acted in, produced and directed “A Jasmine For A Gardener”, “Brown Sugar Too Bitter For Me”, “83 Million Gees” and “Forgotten Promise”.
According to the proclamation by Schenectady Mayor, Gary McCarthy, Mahadeo has received many awards, recognitions and citations for his dedication and outstanding work in the arts.
He was awarded the Golden Arrowhead Award of Distinction as well as the Best Actor Award at the National Drama Festival in Guyana for his performance in the play “83 Millions Gees”, in 2012, and the film “Watch De Ride 2: Justice”, in 2013.
“We congratulate him on his impressive body of work and thank him for his dedication to the arts and humanitarism,” the Mayor said in his proclamation.
