The business end of the Georgetown Zone of the Guinness ‘Greatest of De Streets’ Futsal Competition
begins in earnest this evening with round of 16 action, at the National Cultural Centre Tarmac.
When the competition began two weeks ago, over fifty teams registered to compete for prize money totaling in excess of $1million, along with an opportunity to play in the national playoffs.
The large number of entrants forced the Organisers to stage two nights of preliminary matches to arrive at eight teams who then joined the traditional twenty-four for the main draw.
One of those that qualified was West Back Road and they’ve since earned the status of giant killers after registering an unlikely win against title holders Queen Street-Tiger Bay, who were eventually eliminated from the tournament.
In the fixtures tonight, Leopold Street led by O’kenie Fraser takes on Festival City Street Fighters, one of the teams that participated in the preliminary phase and this could be a dangerous opponent for the former champions Leopold Street.
This encounter will be followed by the clash between Cross Street and West Back Road. The Cross Street unit has in their lineup players the caliber of Ronaldo Dover and Samuel Hunte, while Akeem ‘Too Cute’ Fitzpatrick and Keon Caesar will lead the charge for victory for West Back Road.
Hope Street, the last remaining team from Tiger Bay will need to continue its sublime form to get past North Ruimveldt packed with star-studded players such as Gerald Gritten, Joshua Browne and Travis ‘Zorro’ Grant.
The game before the break pits West Front Road ‘Gold is Money’ with a lineup that includes Hubert and Wendell Pedro and Stellon David against the Paul Port and Devon Hyman led Island All-star team.
After the break, Albouystown ‘A’ with Shaka Jones and Stefan McLean tackle Globe Yard, before Andy Duke and Vincent Thomas lead 2012 national champions Back Circle in its engagement against Albouystown ‘B’, followed by the penultimate clash of the night involving Alexander Village and Festival City Warriors.
The final game of the evening will see crowd favourites Sparta Boss tackle South Sophia in a highly anticipated matchup. Dennis Edwards, Cleyon Forrester, Eusi ‘Boneyman’ Phillips and playmaker Devon ‘Don Don’ Millington is set to appear for Sparta Boss, while South Sophia will have in their lineup, Shemroy Arthur and Sheik Kamal.
The games are expected to produce some exciting football and once again the Organisers are urging the fans to come out and support the night’s action.
