The Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG) has expressed disgust over a video, published on
Facebook and on other media, which deliberately and selectively showed slums and neglected areas of Georgetown and which falsely had the voice and image of Minister of Tourism, Irfaan Ali, dubbed over.
The Minister’s image and voice were taken from a video made by the Guyana Tourism Authority, promoting Guyana as a tourist destination to be discovered.
“The Ministry of Tourism, in collaboration with and the full support of THAG and with funding from the International Development Bank, recently made a substantial investment in engaging the services of an International Marketing Agency to brand Guyana as a Tourism destination to be discovered. Those of us in the industry have invested considerably in producing a tourism product comparable if not superior to any in our region,” THAG said yesterday.
“Irrespective of your views on the original video, the person or persons who have produced this grossly misleading and damaging distortion of our Country’s image may consider themselves politically clever, when, in fact, they are incredibly stupid, causing incalculable damage to our industry by this reprehensible behaviour.”
THAG believed that the behaviour was clearly intended to gain cheap political mileage at the expense of the country’s tourism industry.
