Veracruz, Mexico, – Guyana completed its participation in the XX11 CAC Games here in Veracruz Mexico, with another bronze medal for the Ladies and a fifth place showing for the Men.
The women who advanced to face a tough Mexico team in the semifinals, lost by a score of 2-0 (Dead rubbers are not played in the knock out stage). Ashley Khalil lost to Individual gold medalist Samantha Teran in three games, as did Ashley DeGroot who lost to Karol Urrutia. The ladies as a result claimed a bronze medal in the team competition to go along with their bronze medal in the ladies doubles event.
The Men’s team ended its Games, claiming fifth. They lost to a tough Jamaican team in the quarterfinals of the Men’s event by a 2-0 margin as well. Sunil Seth lost Lewis Walters and Jason Khalil lost to Bruce Burrows to seal their fate.
As a result the Men had to be contented in the consolation draw, where they faced St. Vincent and the Grenadines in a rematch of their pool play, however the result would be more different but rather more convincing as the men swept the tie in two matches without conceding a game. This gave the Men a fifth place finish, which was just outside the medals.
The team completed a successful week taking home two medals and look forward to their next challenge in the New Year when they head to the Pan-Am Games in Toronto in July. The team left Veracruz yesterday.
