Dear Editor,
The role of the police is the protection of life and property and the preservation of the peace.
With the current political situation now existing in Guyana, the role of the police is paramount in ensuring that public order is maintained at all times.
I will assume that the top brass of the Police Force have put measures in place to curtail any form of public disorder by the citizens.
Furthermore, intelligence gathering in the Force at this time is critical since the police should not allow to re-occur what transpired at Linden. I anticipate that the police high command will be evaluating the political situation daily and instructions will be given where necessary.
The flash point areas where political problems might occur are already being identified and contingency measures are being put in place to curtail any form of civil disobedience. The areas where political disobedience might occur are Georgetown, Linden, Berbice, Essequibo and Bartica.
However, in my opinion, Georgetown and to a lesser extent Berbice are critical in the police analysis. Other areas will be examined. However, a critical analysis will show that any disturbance could be quickly dealt with by the police.
The Linden disturbance is fresh in the police’s mind and I strongly believed that they would have learnt from their mistake and is confident that any disturbance will be handled in a professional manner.
The high command of the Police Force must be visible on the streets to give the public the confidence that they are protected. Citizens who participate in any political rally must be aware of the laws and they too have a responsibility. Should they fail to adhere to the laws, they must know that the police will use any measure which is deemed appropriate within the ambit of the law.
You mentioned that “it Is incumbent upon families of police persons to urge them to respect the rule of law in the performance of their duty”. On the other hand, the police must advise their families that they must obey the instructions given by a Police Officer.
The Acting Commissioner of Police must be able to evaluate the situation and where ever possible, remain within the ambit of the law in dispensing justice. I am confident that if he remains visible in leading his troops, the situation will be incident free and it will go well for democracy in Guyana.
