The unlicensed driver Odida Underwood was found guilty as charged for an accident which resulted in the death of
former Chief Librarian, Gillian Thompson, last Christmas Eve. The matter finally concluded before Magistrate Fabayo Azore yesterday and the driver was sentenced to five years in jail. Underwood was also slapped with three other charges previously: driving without a licence, without third party insurance and without the consent of the owner of the motor vehicle, to which he pleaded guilty.
He maintained his innocence in regard to the causing death by dangerous driving charge.
It is alleged that on Tuesday, December 24, last year, at North Road and Shiv Chanderpaul Drive, Underwood drove motor car PPP 8655 in a manner dangerous to the public and killed Gillian Thompson.
The Chief Librarian sustained severe injuries after Underwood’s vehicle slammed into a National Library bus in which she was the front seat passenger. The Chief Librarian succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Underwood was represented by Attorney-At-Law, Adrian Thompson, who told the court that his client is a 24-year-old gold miner who resides at 197 Guyhoc Park. He added that the facts are different from what transpired on the day in question.
Adrian Thompson said that Underwood had an emergency for which he left abruptly to meet his daughter after receiving a call from her mother. His lawyer further stated that the car which his client drove did not come into contact with the deceased.
Gillian Thompson was employed with the National Library for 17 years. She is remembered fondly by all who knew her as an organized, understanding, quiet, and supportive individual who worked tirelessly to advocate literacy in Guyana.
