Former chairman of the Region nine Athletics Club Sugreem Singh yesterday made a
donation to three of the District’s athletes for their performances at the 54th Ministry of Education/Guyana Teachers Union National Schools’ Athletics championships.
The event was cancelled on Thursday after heavy downpour left the Guyana Defence Force ground at Base Camp Ayanganna waterlogged.
At a simple ceremony held at Richard Ishmael School, Woolford Avenue, Sugrim presented a pair of running boots, trophies, cash incentives, water bottles and bags each to Simona Lawrence and Mary Leandrew, while Velesa Harding received two trophies.
Lawrence won the Girls 10k road race in a time of 41 minutes 55:09 seconds, while Leandrew took first place in the Girls U-20 800m race and Harding copped the female teachers’ long jump and 800m events.
Speaking during the presentation, Singh who is also a life member of the club said that Athletics is on the rise in the District and they will continue to support the athletes. “I am sure you would have bettered last year’s performance where we captured 14 gold medals, I know how disappointed you are that the event was cancelled, but I would like to encourage you to continue training hard and take the sport seriously,” Singh told the Athletes.
He also pledged to support Lawrence with $10,000 per month for her continuous development.
Chairman of the club, Kenrick Lewis stated that the Districts’ main aim was to capture 20 gold medals at the championships and was confident they would have achieved that feat. He thanked Singh and said his input will serve to motivate other athletes.
In an invited comment, Lawrence said that she wants to represent Guyana at next year’s CARIFTA games and is working towards doing her country proud.
