Dear Editor,
In your November 14, 2014 issue I noticed an article stating that the N.I.S has billions of dollars for unidentifiable contributors. Please allow me to make a comment on that.
Prior to migration, I worked for the Guyana government as postal work ( Blairmont post office) accounts clerk ( Soesdyke/Linden land development project) and the Guyana Police Force among shorter stints at two other government jobs. I was under the impression that I contributed as Donald Adrian Denhart.
I returned to Guyana several years ago, on an invitation from “Go Invest Guyana “ and made an attempt to update my contributions as I intended to re-migrate. That’s when I learned that the N.I.S has no contributions for me after my employment at Blairmont ( GPO ) or at least, that’s what the N.I.S officer I spoke to , tried to convince me of. The names Donald Adrian Sookraj (mom’s maiden name) and Donald Adrian were found along with Donald Adrihan and Donald Adrian Denhart; however, no monies were deposited for those names because those names don’t match the N.I.S number on file.
My attempt to explain to the officer that I was sometimes called those names, was met with suspicion and I was alter informed, after she seemed convinced that those names were mine, that I only wanted to update my contribution so that I may collect pension. I was asked to visit the G.P.F and asked that my contributions be sent over. I did that but it seems the finance officer reneged on the promise to send the info over.
My problem was, my parent’s marriage was never registered. I found that out in 1974. I made the effort and had a deed poll made out to show that Donald Adrian Sookraj and Donald Adrian Denhart was the same person and henceforth will be know as the latter. That did not help apparently as some of my country men had problems pronouncing words with H, E. I and A. Instead of Donald Adrian. I was sometimes listed as Donald Adrihan. I sign that name, on occasion as I was instructed to do so, not because it was my name.
During my time as a police officer, I met several hundred citizens with the same issue, some of which were caused by officers who refused to admit they were unable to correctly spell a person’s name or simply did not enquire on the proper spelling of that individual name. Individual’s hand-written reports also contributed to the confusion. Nazareen became Nazarun etc.
I have written letters to various government officials, seeking assistance to have this matter resolved, including Dr. Luncheon. No one has responded to my attempts.
If you could assist or know of someone that may assist I will be grateful as I am still very much interested in returning home and have started the process by building a home in Guyana .
Don Denhart
Please share this to every Guyanese including your house cats.
