Two men who were detained during Friday’s confrontation between police and slain robbery suspect, Royston Waldron, were yesterday remanded on two counts of armed robbery.
Ronley Rampersaud and Seon Grant were charged with conspiring to commit a felony and robbery under arms yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The men appeared before Magistrate Ann McLennon. It is alleged that on November 10, they conspired to commit a felony, and on the same day at Sherriff Street at Georgetown, armed with a gun robbed Leoni Sammoogan of $20,000.
Although the matter was indictable and they were not required to plead, the Magistrate thereafter applied the Administration of Justice Act (AJA) and then reread the charges to the defendants to which they pleaded ‘not guilty’ and the pleas were entered.
When asked by the Magistrate if there were any objections to bail, Police Prosecutor Dinero Jones noted the nature and gravity of the offence. Prosecutor Jones also told the court that similar charges were likely to be made against the defendants.
Rampersaud, 28, told the court that he works as a DVD vendor. He gave his address as 124 Middle Road, East La Penitence, Georgetown and was convicted for a similar offence.
Grant, 26, said he is a self-employed clothes vendor who hails from Eccles, East Bank Demerara.
The two were remanded until November 28, and the matter has been transferred to Magistrate Judy Latchman’s court.
Rampersaud and Grant were detained last Friday after police intercepted a car at Thomas and Alexander Streets, Kitty. The vehicle was being driven by ex-policeman Royston Waldron, who was shot dead and who police said was a suspect in several armed robberies.
