DEAR EDITOR,
The current constitutional crisis created by the President and his cabal, plus the ongoing problems with the Commissioner General of GRA coupled with the vulgar and obscene language of the Attorney General and his threats against Kaieteur News Publisher Glenn Lall and his staff, have brought unprecedented shame and disgrace to our beloved Guyana. This is not a reflection of the nation but that of a low, barefaced, shameless and discredited regime that is unfit to govern.
Nearly all of these disgraceful and embarrassing developments have been witnessed in the wider Caribbean and most of the world. The President’s insistence that the Attorney General has done nothing wrong and his (President’s) prorogation of Parliament speaks to his lack of leadership skills. By supporting the Attorney General, the fanatics at Freedom House have proved that they are blind to wrongdoing and this could set a dangerous precedent for the youths. This is also true of his entire cabinet, except the Minister of Education, Miss Manickchand, who vehemently and publicly condemned the vulgarity and the shame that the disgraceful Attorney General has brought on the nation.
Most importantly, however, the prorogation of Parliament and supporting the vulgar behaviour of the Attorney General expose the limitations of the inept PPP cabal who lack some of the intangibles and sensibilities that make for wise leadership. These dictators who criticized the 1980 Constitution have now unashamedly coveted it and have used it to fire the people’s representatives and to circumvent the democratic process in Parliament. To them, image, honesty, morality and good governance, do not mean anything.
Further, truly deep and intelligent leaders would have done all they could to ensure that they never presided over the proroguing of Parliament which is the seat of democracy. But the dictators at Freedom House do not care about or value the work of Parliament, democracy or the people’s freedom. Instead, the people have been greeted with smug utterances of one of the so-called superior caste in the regime, and with arrogance and hatred for the opposition, Parliament and democracy.
Sadly, the PPP administration appears unable to understand that those who hold power have the foremost responsibility to improve the lives of the people, elevate the standard of office, and to raise the level of governance. Part of this inability to understand this reality is their innate deceitfulness, which is concerned mainly with raping the treasury to enrich themselves, friends and relatives, and to covet the best ocean-front lands for themselves.
It is significant for the public to understand the seriousness and depth of the Constitutional crisis to which the PPP regime has placed on the nation; the level that they have descended to, while studiously avoiding to tell the people the truth. Similarly, despite the obvious failures of the minority regime, their opportunistic leaders continue in office, apparently oblivious to the massive suffering of the poor and the working class and intent on avoiding any sincere, open dialogue with the people, including their own supporters. This corrupt and dictatorial government is bent on ruling by decree to avoid any scrutiny of how they have and continue to recklessly spend the taxpayers’ money on bogus contracts.
Despite the painfulness and shamefulness of the current state of affairs, the low depths to which the PPP cabal has now descended has provided the people with some comfort that this surreal period is nearing its end. Their obvious challenges at holding on to power are increasing by the hour. They can no longer be masked by their propaganda, distortions and untruths as in the past. Guyanese are wise to see through these hypocritical actions.
