A reputed husband who allegedly confronted his ‘wife’ with a bottle after a domestic dispute is cooling off behind bars for a few weeks.
Martin Mckinnon, appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to face the charge against him.
It is alleged that on September 9, at Meadow Bank, East Bank Demerara, Mckinnon feloniously wounded with intend to maim, disfigure, disable or cause grievous bodily harm to Josephine Armstrong.
Police Prosecutor Michael Grant told the court that the couple had a history of domestic violence. At 18:30 hours that day the victim was returning home when she was confronted by the defendant who was holding a bottle. They got into a dispute which caused the defendant to get annoyed.
The defendant used the bottle along with an object unknown to the victim and dealt several wounds and lashes upon the victim’s body. She had significant wounding to her face and left hand; she was later admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). Reports were made and Mckinnon was arrested and charged.
The Prosecutor objected to bail. He also stated that since they share the same home the defendant may try to commit a more serious offence. Grant also said that based on the medical report more charges are likely to be made against the accused.
The defendant was not required to plead to the indictable charge. “Meh worship I got my Mom. I can go stay where she is. I know that I’m wrong. I am asking for a reasonable something,” said Mckinnon to the Chief Magistrate who suggested that the accused utilize his right to remain silent.
Chief Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry remanded Mckinnon to prision until November 24.
