Deputising in the absence of President Donald Ramotar, Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh
challenged the local rugby administration to raise the profile and prominence of the sport.
Addressing the team and officials of the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) shortly before handing over a cheque for $4 million on behalf of the Government, at the National Park yesterday, Dr. Singh said he would like to see more Guyanese playing the sport, especially in light of the significant achievements that the current team and its predecessors have attained over the years.
The monies represent expense for the team to travel to Mexico to participate in the NACRA Sevens where the winner is guaranteed a spot in the prestigious Hong Kong Sevens Tournament and the Pan Am Games in Canada next year.
The Minister continuing his remarks urged the Union to do more to promote the achievements of the sport which according to him could help elevate the profile among the populace. He said he was pleased with the teams’ accomplishments and encouraged the players heading to Mexico to return with the winning trophy and make Guyana proud.
He promised to be there with them to lift the trophy on their return, adding that should they win he would not wait on an invitation, but rather would make himself present. Guyana is placed in Group C along with Cayman Islands, Mexico and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
