Five Service investigators are still trying to find the source of the “explosive sound” that
eyewitnesses said that they heard just before the warehouse of Akbar Auto Sales, at Cornelia Ida, went up in flames last month.
Eyewitnesses have indicated that the explosion occurred in the furniture workshop. Indications are that investigators are looking at several possible causes for the fire, but an official who spoke to Kaieteur News was reluctant to comment until further investigations are done.
From statements given to investigators, the owner Munaf Hussein, popularly known as ‘Akbar, was not on the premises when the fire started. Hussein’s wife was reportedly at the couple’s residence, which is near the warehouse.
Kaieteur News understands that Hussein’s employees have stated that they were all on their lunch break at the time, and that the fire had already started when they returned.
The fire, which occurred at around noon on October 31, last, destroyed at least 150 vehicles, as well as the workshop. Mr. Hussein estimated his losses in the millions.
Firefighters were hampered by the presence of petrol in the vehicles and the presence of other flammable material.
Kaieteur News understands that some customers had already made down-payments on vehicles in the warehouse.
Akbar Auto Sales was established some 60 years ago, and was run by Mr. Hussein’s father, Mohamed ‘Akbar’ Hussein, who was gunned down on October 1, 1998, by notorious killer Jerry Perreira.
