People’s Progressive Party (PPP) General Secretary, Clement Rohee, said yesterday that the Guyana Elections
Commission (GECOM) will have to start from square one to prepare for General Elections.
He said that the Certified List of Electors (CLE) was signed off on October 31, last. However, this list is valid for three months only.
Rohee told reporters that even if a vote on the “No Confidence” motion in the National Assembly was passed yesterday resulting in the nation going back to the polls within 90 days, elections would have been around February 9, 2015.
He said that by then the three months would have elapsed rendering the existing list invalid, and resulting in GECOM conducting another process to revise the CLE and update the Voters’ Roll.
Rohee said that the PPP is quite concerned that GECOM will be caught off guard.
He said that GECOM may therefore have to rethink its strategy of recruiting and training polling day staff to that of preparing to revise the existing voters’ list.
Rohee said, “The PPP welcomes such a development since we are confident that there are many eligible Guyanese who are not on the voters’ list for one reason or another.”
The General Secretary claimed that records are there to show that a significant number of persons were still uplifting birth certificates after the recent Claims and Objections would have concluded.
Further, he said that the “Guyanese who would have returned home from neighbouring countries, as well as the large number of remigrants from the USA and Canada would justify our (the PPP’s) position.
LISTEN HOW JAGDEO WILL MAKE ALL GUYANESE RICH!!!
