The trial of Mark Major ended in a hung jury yesterday, after the mixed-twelve member panel failed to reach a unanimous verdict in relation to the accused for the offence of murder.
Major, who is accused of killing his cousin, Orin Forde, during a fight at the Mahaica abattoir on January 6, 2012 is likely to face a retrial at the next session of the Demerara Criminal Assizes.
Forde, 25, of Helena No.1 was reportedly stabbed in his left side at an abattoir a few doors from where he lived.
Employees at the abattoir had related that they heard Forde enquiring from his cousin about some money which was allegedly owed him. Not long after both men were heard raising their voices and a fight subsequently ensued between them.
According to the reports, Forde was taken to the Mahaica Cottage Hospital a few minutes after he was stabbed. He was pronounced dead on arrival. Government Pathologist, Dr. Nehaul Singh, who performed the post-mortem, gave the cause of death as perforation of the liver.
On Wednesday, State Prosecutor Teeshana Lake closed the prosecution case, after calling a number of witnesses.
The matter was presided over by Justice Brassington Reynolds at the Georgetown High Court. The accused was represented by Attorney-at-Law, George Thomas.
In his caution statement, Major claimed that his cousin came at him with a piece of wood and he stabbed him to defend himself.
However, Wilston Forde who testified in the matter claimed that he went to part the fight when the accused pushed him and stabbed the deceased.
