Last four players participate in ‘Beep’ test yesterday
By Sean Devers
The Leon Johnson led Guyana Jaguars will have their first ‘net’ session at the
Providence Stadium from 13:00hrs tomorrow as the team commences preparations for their opening match in WICB Regional Four-day Franchise First-Class tournament against the Leeward Islands from Friday at Providence.
Bajan left-handed all rounder Raymond Reifer is the lone overseas players in the Jaguars’ squad and only one of two non nationals selected with Guyanese Ramnaresh Sarwan, who was picked for Trinidad and Tobago’s Red Steel being the other.
The squad which looks a strong one on paper includes veteran Shiv Chanderpaul and five others who have played at the Test Level and will participate in their practice session at the outdoor ‘nets’ behind the National Stadium.
Meanwhile, the last four players who were unavailable to participate in the ‘Beep test’ prior to the two practice matches because of the West Indies International duties, had their ‘Beep tests’ done yesterday morning at the GCC ground Bourda.
Leon Johnson, who was a part of the regional team to India, Raymond Reifer, who arrived in Guyana after the fitness drills were concluded, Devendra Bishoo and Assad Fudadin (both in Sri Lanka with the ‘A’ team) did their ‘Beep test’ yesterday, while Ronsford Beaton (who was also in Sri Lanka) did his test before he departed Guyana.
The squad assembled looks the best possible one and Chairman of the National selectors Rayon Griffith, who was recently appointed Assistant Coach to Head Coach Esuan Crandon, informed that while the Head Coach had no vote in the team’s selection he had an input in the process.
Griffith, a former National fast bowler, said he was satisfied that the best possible collection of players was selected and especially pleased with their level of physical fitness.
He is confident that the Jaguars would produce a better performance than they did earlier this year when the failed to win a single game. The Jaguars’ first three matches are set for Providence before the final game for the year is scheduled for Trinidad.
The season then breaks for Christmas and resumes with the NAGICO Super50 before the First-Class season continues with the fifth round from February 6-9 when Guyana face-off with Jamaica at Sabina Park in Jamaica.
Please share this to every Guyanese including your house cats.
