Gregory House, a taxi driver, who is said to be no stranger to the Police, appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday to answer to a charge of simple larceny.
It is alleged that House snatched one gold chain from Natasha Sherriff on November 4 in the vicinity of Main Street, Georgetown. He pleaded not guilty.
Police Prosecutor Bharat Mangru told the court that on the day in question the victim was on Main Street, when the defendant snatched her chain and ran. The woman raised an alarm and public spirited citizens caught the suspect and held on to him until the police arrived.
The stolen article was found in his pocket. During his submission, Mangru told the court that the defendant was charged and convicted for similar offences in two different courts. Given his previous offences and convictions, Prosecutor Mangru objected to bail.
The 43-year-old taxi driver hails from La Parfaite Harmonie Housing Scheme, West Bank Demerara.
The Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry upheld the prosecution’s objection and bail was refused. The matter has been adjourned to November 28.
