Mahadeo Ramnarine, 43, a cane cutter of Betsy Ground, East Canje, Berbice and a father of five who inflicted a beating on his wife, after returning home from work and found that she did not cook because she was drunk, has been penalized for his indiscretion.
Ramnarine, appeared on Friday before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court on two charges committed on Jennifer Andrews. He is charged with using abusive language and common assault. He pleaded guilty to the assault charge and not guilty to the abusive language charge.
Prosecutor Sergeant Godfrey Playter told the court that, the incident occurred on Wednesday 5th November at the couple’s home. He stated that after Ramnarine had threatened and beaten the woman he armed himself with a knife and threatened her further.
The woman became fearful for her life, reported the matter at the Reliance Police Station. The man was arrested and charged with the offences.
In court, Ramnarine was fined $15,000 with an alternative or twenty days imprisonment, and a one year bond on the assault charge. He was granted $10,000 bail on the threatening language charge.
The defendant has opted to serve his term in jail since he has no money.
