Twenty years ago, when 40-year-old Devika Persaud, a security guard of Land of Plenty, Essequibo Coast, discovered that she was pregnant for the second time she never knew she was having triplets.
In fact, having no other alternative than to accept that she was pregnant for the second time, while already caring for an 11-month-old daughter amidst marital problems, Persaud bargained for a son.
Eight months into her pregnancy, an ultra sound examination performed on Persaud failed to make a definitive pronouncement as to whether she was in fact pregnant with triplets. In a recent interview the woman related that the doctor who conducted the examination told her that she was probably carrying an unusually big baby.
Today, 20 years later, the woman is celebrating 20 years of triple joy. The triplets are her daughters Radha, Rajshri and Reenica Mansaram, identical children. Her eldest daughter is Kavita Mansaram and she raised them single handedly.
Like any other single parent, taking on the responsibility of a mother and father can be a herculean task. Persaud’s experiences from her account, are no different. She explained that the single task of caring for her four daughters proved most challenging, especially immediately after the triplet’s had celebrated their first birth anniversary.
It was a “handful”; she had to programme her life in order to care for her young daughters in an efficient way. She said that when the triplets started to breast feed, she had to strategize a plan where one baby was allowed to suckle at a time. This procedure lasted up until the triplets were three months old, the exact period they stopped breast feeding routinely.
“For one year, I received donations from private businesses and the Georgetown Lions Club. It’s not easy to feed and clothe four small children, send them to school, all at the same time.
“Many nights I had to stay awake with them.”
As her daughters grew, Persaud stressed that she was then forced to seek employment as a domestic. Providing meals and clothing her daughters, who were all attending school, at the same time was tough on her.
Persaud said that additional attention had to be directed at enforcing strong disciplinary values, which included good morals. She taught her young girls to adopt the key principles of contentment at a tender age.
Looking back today, Persaud said that her efforts have paid off. “I am proud of my girls. Today when I walk with them, I can certainly lift my head high.”
Working her way from a domestic to a security guard, Persaud said that she never left her children hungry. She said that her children survived practically with the kind assistance of her grandmother, Chandrawattie Persaud, a/k”Aunty Marajin”, who lives in Canada. She gave them the house at Land Of Plenty.
The triplets were born on November 2, at the Woodlands Hospital and upon their return to the Essequibo Coast their life’s journey began, at Land of Plenty. Dr. Neville Gobin was the surgeon who delivered Persaud’s daughters via Caesarian Section.
Persaud said while the girls would receive long stares whenever they venture out either to attend Church or work or any social event, she herself experiences difficulty at times recognising their voices, especially when she has to make a telephone call.
“Sometimes the girls would play a prank on me because it’s difficult at times recognising their voices.”
From the time of the triplets’ birth to when they were one year old, Persaud said in order to fully identify each one of the girls she would tag them with different colours not to become confused.
Reenica Mansaram, one of the triplets, said that her friends as well as people in general find it hard distinguishing her from her sisters. The identical triplets who are all Christians attend the Bible Baptist Church, in Cotton Field.
Reenica works at a furniture store, while Rajshri works at an internet café at Cotton Field. The girls’ dream is to meet another set of triplets.
The triplets were treated to a trip to the mighty Kaieteur Falls in observance of their 20th birth anniversary in October. The trip was sponsored by their foster father, Godfrey George.
The girls also made a special donation to the less fortunate children of the Joshua House. (By Yannason Duncan).
