More than 40 surgical operations were conducted in less than one week as part of the
efforts of the George Washington University Medical Team to support the Ministry of Health.
The team of almost 20 individuals arrived in Guyana on November 1, with the intention of performing gynaecological, urological and general surgeries at both the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) and West Demerara Regional Hospital.
The efforts of the team, which was led by Dr. Khashayar Vaziri, was on Thursday evening lauded by Minister of Health, Dr. Bheri Ramsaran, who hosted a reception in their honour at the East Coast Demerara, Grand Coastal Inn, Thursday evening.
According to Minister Ramsaran, the team’s visit became a reality after a meeting with a New Amsterdam-born Guyanese living in the US, Mr Prem Singh. It was following extensive discussions, organised by Singh, that a group dubbed Doctors International (with doctors from the George Washington University Medical Centre) was established.
“We must thank Prem for being a good son of the soil,” said Dr. Ramsaran as he addressed the jovial gathering at the Grand Coastal Hotel.
This is the second major visit of the team having visited and supported the public health sector in similar fashion last year. And according to team-leader Dr. Vaziri, there have been many levels of improvement within the local health sector since the team’s visit last year.
Among the improvements listed, was the fact that the West Demerara Regional Hospital has since been able to add an operating room. Currently the West Demerara Hospital has in place two functional operating rooms.
According to Regional Health Officer, Dr. Nadia Coleman, the support that was forthcoming over the past week was very much appreciated as it served the Region Three Hospital well.
Also speaking at the reception Thursday evening was Dr. Chris Prashad, Urologist attached to the GPHC. He spoke of working closely with the team as efforts were made to complete close to 15 urological cases. He alluded to the professionalism of the team even as he underscored the team members’ willingness to share their knowledge with the local staffers they were required to collaborate with.
The team which is set to depart these shores today also facilitated Continuous Medical Education (CME) Lectures to medical practitioners on issues including: Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia. This particular subject was delivered by team member Dr. Michael Phillips of the Medical Faculty Associates at the George Washington University, Department of Urology.
