Lions of Guyana were recently called upon to become more compassionately aware of the
character and needs, joys and suffering of individual human beings in other lands. This call was made by District Governor, Lion Maxine Cummings, as Lions observed International Relations Month (October).
There was a Prayer Breakfast which was held at the Park Vue Hotel, Farm, East Bank Demerara. The programme was chaired by Lion Petal Ridley- Chairperson – International Relations.
In her address, District Governor Maxine Cummings called on Lions to extend the human quality of friendship to others, noting that it is the hope of the organization that when one sees oneself in others, the experience will transform one’s vision of the world and create a lifestyle in which international understanding and cooperation permeate one’s personal activities.
She called on the Lions to use this activity, which is the first of its kind in Guyana, to be the catalyst for each of us as Lions, and every Lion club to reaffirm our commitment to foster international relations.
Deputy Resident Representative, Ms Chisa Mikami, delivering the feature address said, that the Lions Clubs were the first non-governmental organizations invited to assist in the drafting of the United Nations Charter, and have supported the work of the UN from its establishment in 1945 to present.
She said that the mandates of both Lions and the UN are parallel with each other as the Lions Clubs strive “to create and foster a spirit of understanding among the peoples of the world.”
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has delivered a message for this year’s celebration of United Nations Day.
He said that while he is happy with the achievements and accomplishments of the UN over the years, he is reminding everyone to keep their eyes set on the 2015 deadline for the Millennium Development Goals.
“We are living through a period of profound turmoil, transition and transformation. Insecurity, inequality and intolerance are spreading. Global and national institutions are being put to the test. With so much at stake, the United Nations must keep pace across the spectrum of its activities — peace, development, human rights, the rule of law, the empowerment of the world’s women and youth,” the Secretary-General’s message states.
Lions Clubs International supports the United Nations idea of a world at peace, and has maintained consultative status with the Economic and Social Council since 1947. Lions are encouraged to be informed, to support, and to disseminate information about the UN, its humanitarian objectives, and the work of its agencies such as International Relations month, as well as ongoing response to other programmes such as Club Twinning, Peace Poster Contests, Youth Exchanges and Camps.
