Though their progress has been less than convincing when compared to last year, defending
champions of the Courts Pee Wee Schools Football Competition St. Pius have nevertheless made it to the semi-finals and on course to defend their title.
The champs, who begun the tournament with two drawn engagements, have advanced to the latter stage more on gutsy performances rather than the free flowing brand of football that they exhibited last year and they’ve clearly demonstrated to all pretenders to their throne that they will not go down easily.
They survived a penalty shootout against F. E. Pollard who came into that encounter in ripping form and played impressively against the reigning champion, before succumbing 4-3 in the shootout after the game ended in a 1-1 stalemate.
They now face Tucville who have clearly been the most impressive and consistent team in the competition to date and this game promises to produce fireworks with the latter starting as slight favourites to win.
In the other semi-final, South Ruimveldt upset winners over last year’s beaten finalist West Ruimveldt tackle Stella Maris another team that escaped via the penalty shootout and many believe that this clash could match or even eclipse the Tucville versus St. Pius encounter.
Both semi-finals will start simultaneously at 13:00 hours, but before that six other games are carded for the day as schools battle for positions 5-16.
Action kicks off at 10:00 hours with Enterprise against Ketley, Smith’s Memorial against Marian Academy, East La Penitence against St Stephen’s, Green Acres against North Georgetown, F.E. Pollard against St Angela’s and St Margaret’s against West Ruimveldt.
The competition which concludes on November 15, also have Banks DIH as a sponsor and is being organised by the Petra Organisation.
