It was action galore when footballers from top local clubs threw down the gauntlet when
action in the GFA/Stag Beer 2014 Futsal Football tournament continued at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH), Homestretch Avenue, Thursday evening last.
The action was indeed intense and paved the way for the many other exciting matches in store, when the action got underway Flamingo defeated Black Pearl 3-0 on the back of a Sheldon Gurrick double with support from Quincy Bourne. As the action heated up, fans were treated to pulsating football and the Beacon/Renaissance encounter was truly a gem. Amidst clever passes and structured techniques, Christian Galloway netted a double while his club mate, Kimba Braithwaite capped the victory with a piercing goal.
Rhythm Squad then meted out a 6-2 drubbing to Northern Rangers after Stephon Hope led with a brace. The other successes came of the boots of Amos Ramsay, Orville Stewart, Jermain Willis and Joel Jammott. Rhythm Squad’s goals came off the boots of Terrence Gittens and Kevin Agard.
Blackwater FC were also among the winning teams and triumphed over Houston Stars 3-1 with the scorers being Stephon Christopher, Matthew Burrows and Jermaine Beckles. Mark Phillips pulled one back for the losing team in what was really an inconsequential effort. GFC then lost to Pele, 2-0 with Omali Williams and Calvin Shepherd contributing the winning goals.
Santos eked out a 1-0 victory over GPF compliments of an Anthony ‘Sugar’ Abrams effort while Alpha mauled the GDF 5-1. Travis ‘Zorro’ Grant, Ronson Williams, Kirk Duckworth and Dwight Peters were Alpha’s marksmen, while Eusi Phillips pulled one back for the losers from the penalty spot. The night started with fiery action but concluded on a lukewarm note after Fruta Conquerors and Western Tigers battled to a nil all stalemate.
Meanwhile, the footballers will be in action again next Tuesday when the knockout rounds commence. The action gets underway at 19:00hrs sharp. The competition is sponsored by business conglomerate, Ansa McAl and the winning team carts off $400,000 while the second place finishers receive half of that. The 3rd and 4th place finishers receive $125,000 and $75,000 respectively.
Participating teams are Western Tigers, Fruta Conquerors, Flamingo, Black Pearl Beacons, Alpha United, GDF, GFC, Renaissance, Pele, Northern Rangers, Rhythm Squad, Police, Santos, Camptown and Houston.
