Guyana’s Under-19 athletes did themselves and country proud when the second leg of the Inter Guiana Games was staged in Suriname between October 24-26, 2014. The Guyanese lived up to the billing as worthy competitors despite not enjoying the level of facilities that their counterparts from Suriname and French Guiana have at their disposal.
Our male and female Table Tennis players blanked the opposing players from the two other nations to win the gold medals. The male cycling team won both the Time Trials and Road Race, the win in the latter was commanding in nature with all four of the Guyanese finishing ahead of the home team and the French.
The male volleyball team after being beaten by the Surinamese for the past seven years finally broke the jinx by whipping the Surinamese in the final game and urged on by the Guyanese and French Guiana athletes.
They had taken care of the French team in their first game while the French Guiana boys rallied from two sets down to defeat Suriname in a thriller.
Chess did well to finish second to Suriname, while the Badminton team also finished behind the home team. The general view of the officials and Director of Sport Neil Kumar, who accompanied the Guyana contingent, is that the athletes performed well.
French Guiana is in line to host the first leg of the games in 2015. Following are some scenes from the presentation ceremony.
