Governments like to deceive themselves into thinking that they can say things and the people will always believe them. You cannot fool the people.
The people are not stupid; they may not always tell you what they feel. They may not always express how they feel but you can bet that they know what is going on and they can see through all the propaganda that the government throws their way.
The people are not easily fooled. They know how to fit the jigsaw puzzle together. They have been reading about the many scandals within the government. They have read about these scandals in Kaieteur News. They heard when the business community was urged not to advertize with Kaieteur News. They listened to the attacks from the political platform on Kaieteur News. They have seen more exposures of controversial deals in Guyana. They know that these stories were followed by surveillance of this newspaper, the charges against the publisher and his wife, and then the release of a tape which causes the hairs on your skin to rise when you listen to the contents. The people are not fooled. They see a pattern and they can put the pieces together.
The people have had enough of this government. As you go around the country, you can sense that they are ashamed of the government and the shameless acts that are being committed by those who act in the name of the government. The people are not fools. They see right through a situation.
The people are not going to say much. But they are disgusted at what is happening in this country. They may be passive now but they will demonstrate their disgust when the time comes to cast their votes at the next election.
In 2011, the PPP thought that it had the elections sewn up. But it had neglected the people. It has insulted them by throwing big rallies without addressing their problems. Many supporters of the PPP stayed away because while they were not prepared to give their votes to the opposition party, they did not also want to give it to the government.
On the other hand, the supporters of the opposition were galvanized to vote the PPP out of office. Three things galvanized them. The first was the widespread and unchecked corruption that was being reported in the media. The second were revelations which came out in the libel trial against Kaieteur News and its columnist Freddie Kissoon. The third was the big palace that was built by a big one in the government. The supporters of the opposition came out in their numbers on Election Day to seek a change in administration.
The PPP has learnt nothing from that experience. It is still taking its supporters for granted. It believes that once it harps on the fact that the opposition is frustrating the government and blocking key developmental projects that its supporters will turn out in their numbers the next time elections are called and the PPP will be returned to power. It is taking the people for granted. But the people are not stupid. The people are reading the Kaieteur News and they know what is going on, who is taking advantage of whom.
One of the things that I have learnt in this life is that the ordinary man has a keen sense of what is right and what is wrong and who is being treated fairly and who is being wronged. The people know that advantage is being taken of Kaieteur News. They are not fooled by the charges and attacks on Kaieteur News. They have seen through all of these things.
They know right from wrong and they side with those who are wronged. They may not come out and protest but they know when advantage is being taken of others.
The people of Guyana have had it up to their necks with this government. The people of Guyana are fed up with the corruption in the country and a scandal-ridden government. The supporters of the PPP are fed up with their government and party. What pushes them back into the arms of the PPP is ethnic insecurity. But after the advantage that they see being taken of Kaieteur News, these supporters are going to once again do what they did in 2011. They are not going to vote for the opposition. They are going to stay away from the polls and not support the PPP as they did before.
The people are not stupid. They are watching closely at what is unfolding in Guyana and the insults that the government is throwing their way by its excuses for not reigning in rogue elements within the administration.
Please share this to every Guyanese including your house cats.
