A 32 year -old resident of Plaisance Squatting Area, East Coast Demerara (ECD) was shot twice by police during a botched attack on a 51-year-old female vendor yesterday.
The incident took place at around 11: 35 hours at the Plaisance ‘Line Top’ area.
Police said the suspect, Quacy McPherson was armed with a .38 revolver when he approached Hardai Rodrigues, a 51 year -old vendor from Martyrs’ Ville, ECD in an attempt to rob her.
The woman who was standing near her stall in the vicinity of the Plaisance Market retaliated and was “gun –butted” in the head by her attacker. As the robbery was in process, ranks of a mobile police anti-crime patrol arrived on the scene and Mc Pherson opened fire. Policemen returned fire hitting him in the head and left foot.
Police recovered an unlicensed .38 revolver with three rounds and a spent shell. Both the victim and the attacker were taken to GPHC for treatment. Mc Pherson is said to be in stable condition.
The victim’s husband, Nigel Roberts told Kaieteur News that he is thankful that his wife suffered no grave injuries during the ordeal, except for slight swelling to the head and minor injury to the ankle.
“I does usually drop she off in the morning to open she stall and so …. She say that it happen after I left. Like this man was watching she long before he attack she, because plenty people does be drinking at the Guinness Bar right opposite where she does sell, so nobody aint gon walk up to she just like that and rob she,” Roberts said yesterday.
“She don’t know de man, but I hear that he is a bad egg from Plaisance. I just glad nothing aint happen to she because she is a fighter…she does work hard fuh she things dem so she don’t give up just like that,” he added.
The vendor recalled that shortly before the police arrived, Mc Pherson had walked up, pointed his gun at her and demanded that she hand over her apron which contained money.
The woman said that she refused and the thief started to hit her in the head with his gun. She said that she held on to the firearm and her apron and they engaged in a scuffle, during which she sustained the injury to her ankle. The matter has since been reported to the Sparedaam Police Station.
Meanwhile, the suspect was involved in another altercation just a few weeks ago. Last month, Mc Pherson was shot twice in his right leg as he was ‘sporting’ in the vicinity of the Guiness Bar during a Diwali celebration.
He claimed that an individual, whom he did not know, “bumped” into him twice while he was “drinking” at the bar.
Mc Pherson claimed that the incident led to a big argument between them which resulted in him being shot twice in the leg.
