Family life in several Amerindian communities in Regions One and Nine will be further strengthened with the provision of secure comfortable housing accommodation by the Ministry of Housing and Water.
Housing Minister Irfaan Ali, on Thursday, announced that Government has garnered US$3.1M to expand its Hinterland Housing Project that has already benefitted over 200 families in its pilot phase.
Addressing Toshaos at the National Toshaos Conference, Ali said that efforts are being made to enhance the lives of the Indigenous population.
The Minister said that the annual conference was held at the Guyana International Conference Centre, Liliendaal.
The Minister said that this initiative would become a reality next year once the allocation is approved in the National Assembly. Some of the communities that will benefit include Whitewater, Sebai, Kamwatta, Massara, Potarinau, and Karasabai.
He believes that community settlement and expanding housing in Amerindian communities is an important part of future development.
Delivering a presentation on the initial Hinterland Housing Project was Donnell Bascom, Senior Community Development Officer. The Hinterland Housing Project was created to improve the living conditions of Amerindians and promote healthy family life.
It commenced in 2009 and after careful planning and designing with input from residents, the first disbursement of subsidies was made in 2011. Initially, the project targeted 200 families but with labour and affordable materials an additional eight families benefited.
Some of the communities that benefited are Manawarin, Ornoqoue, Annai, Katoka and Apoteri.
According to Bascom, 122 families are now living in newly constructed houses equipped with rainwater harvesting systems and have access to sanitary solutions. Eighty-six families benefited from roof replacements and rainwater harvesting systems.
Bascom praised the partnership between the Ministry and the communities. She explained that labour was provided by the villagers.
More than 100 villagers were employed with the project. Materials to construct the houses were purchased from within the communities, effectively contributing to the village economies.
She said that the workers took great pride in their work and delivered excellent houses. The communities, particularly village leaders, took ownership of the projects.
